Variations include: hat band back, pin back, or bar pin back (see pictures).

Hat band back: this back allows you to hook the hat pin on the hat band without putting holes into your hat band. The back is open at one end to allow it to hook on like a bobby pin. The hat band needs to be tight in order for this back to be secure.

Pin back: this back is a regular push pin with locking back.

Bar pin back: this back is like a brooch pin back. It allows you to hook the pin directly to the hat, or through a more flexible hat band.
